Open Concept Kitchen Remodel

From Closed-Off & Dated to Bright, Custom & Built for Gathering

This project is one of our favorite examples of how removing visual barriers and rethinking layout can completely transform the way a home feels.

The Before

The original kitchen had good square footage — but it felt compartmentalized and dated.

• Oak cabinets with limited height
• Laminate countertops
• Patterned sheet vinyl flooring
• Low upper cabinets with soffits
• Minimal island workspace
• Dated lighting
• Visual separation from the living space

Natural light was there… but the finishes and layout kept the space from feeling open and cohesive.

The homeowners wanted:
• A brighter space
• More storage
• A true functional island
• A modern but timeless design
• Better connection to the living area

The Design Approach

At Everstead Design Build, we focus on how clients live — not just how a space looks.

For this remodel, we focused on three major upgrades:

  1. Elevating cabinetry to full height

  2. Expanding and redefining the island

  3. Creating visual flow into the living space

What We Transformed

Full-Height Custom Cabinetry

We removed the soffits and extended cabinetry to the ceiling. This instantly made the room feel taller and more architectural while increasing storage significantly.

Soft White Shaker Cabinets

Crisp, clean shaker cabinetry keeps the space timeless and bright. The simple profile allows other finishes to shine without overwhelming the design.

Matte Black Hardware

Black pulls add contrast and a subtle modern edge against the white cabinetry.

Quartz Countertops

We installed quartz with soft veining for durability and elegance. The waterfall-like overhang and clean lines elevate the island to a statement piece.

Expanded Island

The new island is dramatically larger and now serves as:
• Prep space
• Storage hub
• Casual dining
• Gathering space

It anchors the room and creates true functionality.

Updated Flooring

Warm wood-toned flooring replaced the dated vinyl, bringing warmth and grounding the bright cabinetry.

Subway Tile Backsplash

Glossy, neutral subway tile adds subtle texture while maintaining a classic foundation.

Layered Lighting

Recessed lighting + statement pendant fixtures over the island create warmth and dimension, especially in the evenings.

Cohesive Appliance Integration

Stainless steel appliances blend seamlessly into the clean, modern aesthetic.

The Result

This kitchen no longer feels separated from the home — it feels integrated, intentional, and built for gathering.

What was once heavy and dated is now:

• Open
• Elevated
• Functional
• Timeless
• Designed around real life

This is what thoughtful design-build remodeling looks like.

If your kitchen feels dated, dark, or disconnected — let’s change that.
