A Kitchen Designed for Bakers

From Crowded & Compartmentalized to Open, Functional & Built for Gathering

This remodel wasn’t just about updating finishes — it was about creating a kitchen that could handle real life.

With three daughters who love to bake, this family needed more than a beautiful kitchen. They needed space to spread out, work side by side, and actually enjoy being in the kitchen together.

The original layout simply wasn’t designed for that.

The Before

The previous kitchen had solid structure but lacked functional flow.

• A raised island that limited usable prep space
• A wall oven interrupting cabinetry and storage
• A cooktop placement that created congestion
• Refrigerator location disrupting movement paths
• Limited continuous counter space
• Tight working zones for multiple cooks

When everyone was baking at once, it felt crowded and inefficient.

The Design Vision

The goal was clear:

Design a kitchen that could comfortably support multiple bakers at the same time — without sacrificing beauty.

To accomplish that, we focused on:

  1. Expanding and leveling the island

  2. Improving appliance placement and workflow

  3. Maximizing uninterrupted prep surfaces

  4. Elevating the design to feel cohesive with the rest of the home

What We Transformed

Layout Transformation

Expanded, Level Island

We removed the raised bar and created a generous, single-level island with cabinetry on both sides.

Now the island functions as:

• A primary baking station
• Prep space for multiple cooks
• Seating and gathering space
• Storage on both sides for tools and ingredients

The uninterrupted quartz surface gives the girls room to roll dough, decorate cookies, and set up multiple mixers at once.

This single design move completely changed how the kitchen functions.

Appliance Reconfiguration

We removed the wall oven and redesigned the cooking wall for better flow.

The family selected the Café 30 Inch Wide 6.7 Cu. Ft. Slide-In Gas Range for its performance, capacity, and beautiful detailing — perfect for serious home bakers.

We paired it with a custom wood hood from https://hoodsly.com/.
The dark wood finish was intentionally chosen to tie into the other dark wood elements throughout the home, creating continuity and warmth while adding architectural presence.

The refrigerator was relocated to reduce congestion, and the cooktop was repositioned to improve workflow between prep, cooking, and clean-up zones.

Finishes & Materials

Tile Selection

The textured blue backsplash tile was sourced from Soho Studio.

Its horizontal lines add subtle movement while bringing depth and color to the space. It acts as a focal point without overwhelming the room.

Plumbing Fixtures

All plumbing fixtures were selected from Moen, providing reliability, performance, and a refined finish that complements the overall palette.

The warm-toned faucet adds softness against the crisp cabinetry and cool tile tones.

Custom Cabinetry & Hardware

SwiftCoat Cabinets Soft white shaker cabinetry keeps the space timeless, while warm brass hardware from TopKnobs adds dimension and glow without overpowering the design.

The Result

This kitchen is no longer crowded or compartmentalized. It’s open, intentional, and designed around how this family truly lives.

But the best part?

The girls love it.

What was once tight and frustrating is now a space where all three can bake side by side — rolling dough, decorating cookies, and testing new recipes without bumping elbows. The expanded island has become their favorite workspace, and the improved layout allows them to move seamlessly between prep, baking, and clean-up.

And this isn’t just hobby baking.

The girls are the founders of Sugar Plum Sisters Bakery — so this kitchen isn’t just where memories are made. It’s where recipes are developed, orders are prepared, and a small business continues to grow.

Designing a space that supports both family life and entrepreneurial passion is exactly why thoughtful layout matters.

This kitchen doesn’t just look beautiful.

It works beautifully.
